Cloud-native core banking platform
In-market technical leadership for a global core banking platform entering Australia
Client identity and commercially sensitive detail are withheld under the confidentiality terms of this engagement.
Challenge Our client operates a cloud-native core banking and issuer processing platform - a distributed microservices architecture serving banks, fintechs, and digital banks internationally. It was executing an aggressive expansion into Asia Pacific and Australia. The Australian market presented challenges the offshore engineering team was not positioned to navigate alone. Australian financial regulation operates under its own prudential and AML/CTF frameworks. The client base - local fintechs and bank lenders evaluating the platform as an alternative to legacy core banking systems - needed implementation partners who understood both the platform architecture and the Australian financial services context. And implementations had to move quickly: the window between a client committing and requiring a live system was measured in months, not years. They needed senior technical leadership on the ground in Australia - a Fractional CTO function that could own client implementations end to end, hold the technical relationship with local clients, and bridge the gap between a global engineering team on the other side of the world and the specific requirements of Australian financial institutions.
Approach The engagement sat at the intersection of three technical domains: the platform itself, the product requirements of each local client, and the regulatory environment of Australian financial services. The platform is built on MACH principles - microservices, API-first, cloud-native, headless. Implementations are not turnkey deployments. Each client activates the subset of services relevant to their product: a fintech building a prepaid card program activates a different set than a bank building a multi-currency digital account. Knowing which modules to activate, how to configure the ledger structure for each product, and how to integrate the platform APIs with a client's existing systems takes deep platform knowledge combined with a precise reading of the client's business requirements. We fronted every implementation with a structured discovery phase - mapping the client's current state (existing ledger, card program, account structure), defining the target state on the platform, and producing a detailed integration specification before any technical work began. That specification became the contract between us, the client's engineering team, and the platform's engineering team offshore, removing ambiguity before it could turn into rework. For prudentially regulated clients we also produced the technical documentation required for regulatory assessment of new infrastructure - architecture diagrams, data residency confirmations, security control documentation, and operational resilience evidence. A platform may run multi-region with high availability and zero-downtime deployments, but a regulator needs that evidence in a specific form.
Solution We provided Fractional CTO leadership across the platform's Australian client implementations: Enterprise client implementations - led the technical implementation of digital banking and ledger services for local clients whose product suites spanned prepaid cards, digital banking accounts, earned wage access, and disbursements across multiple platform modules. This meant configuring the virtual account ledger for multi-product structures, integrating card issuing APIs with existing program management layers, and establishing the event-based transaction pipeline between platform microservices and downstream reporting systems. For listed and regulated clients, we produced the full technical evidence package their audit and regulatory obligations required. Bank and non-bank lender implementations - across multiple Australian financial institutions, led implementations of core banking, ledger, and digital account services. Each covered ledger architecture design (virtual account hierarchy, transaction type configuration, balance structure), API integration with client front-end systems, card program setup (debit, prepaid, virtual), payment rail connectivity including real-time payments, and operational runbook documentation for internal teams. Technical client management - an ongoing Fractional CTO function covering platform technical queries, escalation management with the offshore engineering team, roadmap input for Australian market requirements, and technical pre-sales support for new clients. We were the senior technical voice for the platform in market. Regulatory documentation - architecture documentation, data residency attestations, security control evidence, and operational resilience documentation for prudential and AML/CTF requirements across regulated client implementations.
Results The engagement let a global platform execute its Australian expansion with senior technical leadership in market, accelerating implementations that would otherwise have depended on an engineering team operating across a half-day time zone gap. Multiple Australian bank and non-bank lender clients went live across the platform's digital banking and ledger services, and those implementations remain in production. What this engagement demonstrates: we can represent a core banking platform in a new market - running implementations end to end for regulated institutions, and producing the evidence a local regulator expects, without the vendor needing local engineering headcount.
