Challenge

Challenge Environmental commodity markets are typically closed systems. Participation sits with a small number of institutional buyers, there is no exchange, price discovery is opaque, and retail investors have no pathway in. Our client set out to change that: hold the underlying commodity in custody, issue a matching token on a public blockchain, and let anyone invest at retail ticket sizes. The engineering problem sat at the intersection of three domains, each with its own technical and compliance obligations: financial services regulation, public blockchain infrastructure, and retail investment. The platform had to acquire and custody the underlying commodity from a regulated market, mint a corresponding token supply on-chain, give retail investors a way to buy and sell it, integrate with the national registry that governs the underlying asset, and operate under financial services licensing and AML/CTF registration. Any one of these is non-trivial on its own. Building them as a single coherent, regulated product on a startup timeline is a different problem entirely.

Approach

Approach We started with the compliance architecture, not the product UI. In a regulated financial product, the technical decisions that determine whether the platform can legally operate are made before the first line of product code is written. We mapped the obligations across financial services licensing, AML/CTF registration, and the custody and retirement rules governing the underlying commodity, then designed the data model and audit trail to satisfy all of them at once. The blockchain layer choice was driven by the product, not by preference. We selected a public chain whose consensus mechanism had cut energy consumption by orders of magnitude - a non-negotiable for a climate-facing product - and implemented the token against the most widely supported standard on that chain, so exchange listings would not require bespoke integration work. The core integrity guarantee was enforced in the contract itself: tokens can only be minted against commodity units actually held in custody. That one-to-one backing is the product's entire promise, so it belongs at the protocol level where an application-layer bug cannot bypass it. The custody architecture kept the two ledgers deliberately separate - the physical commodity held as a regulated financial product, the token issued on-chain - which is what allowed a single design to satisfy both the registry's custody rules and the token standard simultaneously.

Solution

Solution We delivered the full platform: Smart contract - written in Solidity and deployed to mainnet, enforcing the one-to-one backing constraint. Mint and burn are access-controlled behind an authorised wallet and only executed after custody of the underlying unit is confirmed. The contract is immutable after deployment: no admin backdoor, no upgrade path that could introduce custody risk. Custody and registry integration - integration with the national registry governing the underlying commodity, covering both acquisition and retirement. When a wholesale customer retires tokens for certification purposes, the corresponding units are retired in the registry and the tokens burned on-chain, producing a single auditable end-to-end record. Retail trading platform - a React web application for buying, selling, and holding the token. Fiat on-ramp through a payment gateway, portfolio dashboard with holdings, pricing, and historical performance. Designed for investors with no prior crypto experience, mobile-responsive throughout. Exchange integration - integration with a third-party digital currency exchange for secondary market liquidity, alongside the primary market running on the platform itself. Compliance infrastructure - KYC/AML identity verification built into onboarding, transaction monitoring for regulatory reporting obligations, and an immutable, queryable audit log of every mint, burn, transfer, and retirement event.

Results

Results The platform launched and opened a previously institutional-only market to retail investors, with meaningful volume transacted before general availability. The token trades on a third-party exchange as well as the platform's own primary market, and the one-to-one backing constraint has held without incident since deployment. What this engagement demonstrates: we can take a regulated financial product from a blank page to a live, licensed platform - designing the compliance architecture, writing the on-chain code that enforces it, and building the retail experience on top - without treating any of the three as an afterthought.
